Viognier
Synonyms: viogné, vionnier, viognier jaune, viognier vert (France).
Early budding, medium ripening grape. It has a thick skin and its must is generally high in sugar and low in acidity.
It is grown in more and more parts of the world, its home is the northern Rhône where it can be blended in a small percentage alongside the reds of syrah from the Côte Rôtie. Single varietals are also made, the best and most legendary coming from the tiny regions of Condrieu and Chateau Grillet. In addition, good examples are produced in the south of France, Australia and California. They are generally young drinking wines but a small number can age.
The world reference is the single varietal viognier style from the Rhône, similar to the creamy chardonnay from Burgundy, but more aromatic and floral. Ripe white fruit, stone fruit, white flowers and dry stone mingle with brioche and spice notes from barrel aging. The palate is silky and opulent with moderate acidity, warm and with some phenolic structure.
