Romé

Synonyms: romé de Motril, romé negro (Motril in Spain).

Native variety of Málaga of medium to late ripening. Many local winegrowers use it for home production.

It is grown almost exclusively in Axarquia (Málaga). It is a variety that gives wines of little color and little tannic structure. The nose gives notes of red fruit and flowers and the palate is light and fresh. Traditionally the romé has been used to make rosés and has been blended with other grapes in reds. It is said that in recent years single-varietal reds are being promoted, but these are not wines that have reached the Peñín Guide so far.
