Nebbiolo
Synonyms: spanna, nebbiolo d'Anton, nebbiolo di Dronero, chiavennasca, picotendro, picoutener (Italy).
It is a variety of Italian origin, mainly settled in Piedmont (northwestern part of the country). It has a very long cycle, with an early budding and a rather late ripening.
The wines obtained with this variety are usually acidic and quite tannic, so they have and need a high aging capacity to express themselves better. The most common style to find in nebbiolo is "classic", with long stays in oak barrels, producing wines with little color, spicy, rich in tertiary aromas and with powerful tannins, needing long stays in the bottle to round out. It is rare to find wines made with nebbiolo that have less than 4 or 5 years of aging in both barrel and bottle.
