Moscatel de alejandría
Synonyms: Malaga Muscat, Roman Muscat (Alicante), Muscat grano gordo (Salamanca), Muscat d'Alexandrie (France) and Samanna or Saralamanna (Italy).
Due to the fact that it is one of the oldest existing varieties and its wide extension throughout the Mediterranean, there are many synonyms, by zones, regions and countries.
It is a variety with a very Mediterranean character, which needs sun and marine influence. It has large and not very compact bunches, large berries with a lot of pulp and a characteristic muscat flavor. It has low yields and maturity is very marked by the load on the vine. It generally has a long cycle and ripens somewhat late, although this depends on the altitude of the vineyard.
Given its versatility and its wide extension and use, all types of wines are made with this variety, the most common being dry whites, mistelas, sweet flavored wines and those made from raisins. Stylistically, it offers wines with a very floral and sweet aroma, in some cases with an arrope (concentrated or dehydrated must that caramelizes the wine). The best examples are found in Alicante, Valencia and Malaga.
