Manto negro

Synonyms: cabelis, mantuo negro.

Red variety of Spanish origin (Mallorca), with a medium budding and a medium ripening cycle. This is a grape which, with low yields, can easily withstand long ageing in barrels, though in view of the wines tasted in our Peñín Guide, it appears to be looser and more expressive in barrels that are not very toasty and intrusive. Until a few years ago it was usually found in wines with very mature nuances, but new winemakers are looking for more freshness and tension, something that has led to great improvements in the resulting wines. In the few single varietals found in Spain, its uniqueness and its structured and tense finish can be appreciated, all wrapped up in a rustic and fruity style.

When blended, it is usually accompanied by the other great Balearic variety, the callet, which adds freshness and lightness.
