Brancellao
Synonyms: Albarello (Ribeira Sacra and Valdeorras), Serradelo (in Betanzos), Brancello (Rías Baixas), Brancellán and Brencello (in Baixa Limia).
It is a red grape whose origin is said to be in the west of the Iberian Peninsula (Portugal and Galicia). It has a late budding and ripening, which makes it one of the last red varieties to be harvested in Galicia. Not very widespread in Spain, where only 38 hectares are harvested (MAPAMA on 31 July 2018), although the area is gradually increasing as the years go by. In Spain it is mainly found in Ribeira Sacra, Rías Baixas, Ribeiro, as well as in the PGI's (Protected Geographical Indications) Betanzos and Barbanza and Iria.
Stylistically we see it present in red wines of bright colour and medium intensity, with very fruity aromas (fresh red fruit), medium tannin and rich acidity. Many wines have a wild, herbal character, with balsamic notes and an elegant and refreshing mouthfeel.
Some winemakers believe that this variety has a great ageing capacity, but these wines have yet to reach our glasses.
