Grape manuals as comprehensive as Wine Grapes by Jancis Robinson, Julia Harding and José Vouillamoz locate their origin in the Dão region of Portugal, in the Iberian Peninsula. Whatever its original origin, it is characterised by its early budding and ripening and its rich acidity. In Spain it can be found in Arribes del Duero, Asturias, Galicia and the Canary Islands.
The style of this variety varies greatly depending on where it is grown. In Arribes del Duero for example, with its continental climate, we can find it in full-bodied wines, intense in colour and with the presence of black fruit, while in cooler and more Atlantic climates, such as the northern fringe of the island of Tenerife, we can enjoy it in wines with less colour, structure, and with marked balsamic nuances, and on occasions, with somewhat reductive aromas.
