LOCATION:
In the southern area of the island of Tenerife, with vineyards which occupy the slopes of the Teide down to the coast. It covers the municipal districts of Adeje, Arona, Vilaflor, San Miguel de Abona, Granadilla de Abona, Arico and Fasnia.
CLIMATE:
Mediterranean on the coastal belt, and gradually cools down inland as a result of the trade winds. Rainfall varies between 350 mm per year on the coast and 550 mm inland. In the highest region, Vilaflor, the vineyards do not benefit from these winds as they face slightly west. Nevertheless, the more than 200 Ha of this small plateau produce wines with an acidity of 8 g/l due to the altitude, but with an alcohol content of 13%, as this area of the island has the longest hours of sunshine.
SOIL:
Distinction can be made between the sandy and calcareous soil inland and the more clayey, well drained soil of the higher regions, seeing as they are volcanic. The so-called ‘Jable’ soil is very typical, and is simply a very fine whitish volcanic sand, used by the local winegrower to cover the vineyards in order to retain humidity in the ground and to prevent weeds from growing. The vineyards are located at altitudes which range between 300 and 1,750 m (the better quality grapes are grown in the higher regions), which determines different grape harvesting dates in a period spanning the beginning of August up to October.
GRAPE VARIETIES:
WHITE: albillo, marmajuelo, forastera blanca, güal, malvasía, moscatel alejandría, sabro, verdello and vijariego. Authorized: baboso, blanco, listán blanco, pedro ximénez and torrontés.
RED: Preferred: castellana negra, listán negro, malvasía rosada, negramoll and tintilla. Authorized: baboso negro, cabernet sauvignon, listán prieto, merlot, moscatel negro, pinot noir, ruby cabernet, syrah, tempranillo and vijariego negro.
